Restaurants

In no particular order, these are our 10 favourite eating places in Inverness. Admittedly a couple are just outside Inverness but are well worth the journey and clearly we are spoilt for choice.

I would like more information on...

The Clachnaharry Inn

Very popular with locals and only a 10 minute walk from Inverness house. This friendly 17th-century coaching inn offers a varied, good quality menu at lunchtime and in the evenings which is reasonably priced. Four hand pumps dispense a  selection of Scottish ales, true to the poster on their wall – there’s one to suit everybody.

Mustard Seed

Another popular restaurant where booking is essential.  Originally a church and then a book shop the building has been transformed into a modern restaurant with great food and atmosphere.  Their European menu has strong Highland influences and creative in-season ingredients. Great for pre-theatre dining too!

Oakwood Restaurant

Oakwood Restaurant – Just under 5 4 miles outside Inverness on the road to Loch Ness and Fort William.  This has been described as the antidote to pretentious restaurants!  A more down to earth place with delicious food you will not find. Bring your own wine (no corkage) and enjoy a good choice of dishes, including vegetarian and vegan made with quality ingredients and well cooked in a more “family” style.

Dores Inn

9 miles outside Inverness this Inn is another hit with locals and visitors alike! A great pub in a stunning setting with fantastic views of Loch Ness. The food is delicious and reasonably priced, served by friendly staff – they also have a good variety of drinks and a welcoming wood-burning stove. You can sit inside or outside and they do lots of special events If you’re lucky you might get chatting to Steve the Nessie hunter who lives in a trailer by the Inn on the shores of the lake.

Castle Tavern

Our favourite pub food in Inverness.   A traditional, well-run tavern that overlooks Inverness castle. You can sit outside and drink a pint while admiring the castle and the beautiful view of Inverness or visit the beer garden. Friendly, efficient staff, great atmosphere and extremely good food with gluten free options including gluten-free fish and chips

Girvans Restaurant and Patisserie

An old-fashioned cafe style restaurant on a lovely old-fashioned street in the heart of the city.  Going to Girvans is always such a treat, it never fails to impress.  The food is always excellent, the staff attentive and even when busy the setting still manages to feel  intimate.  It has an extensive menu offering good value and it’s open all day.

Rocpool Restaurant

Our staunch favourite since it never disappoints. Situated in the centre of town at the end of the main bridge. This is an incredibly popular modern restaurant with a lively atmosphere, exceptional food and attentive service.  Booking is essential – even at the start of a week – this can be done easily online.

Prime Steak and Seafood

A fairly new restaurant making a big impression! We can vouch for their amazing oysters and the best steak we have ever had. The staff were also amazing despite being very, very busy. A surprisingly enjoyable restaurant experience.
